Earth Day....well maybe a week!

We spent a lot of last week integrating Earth Day into our curriculum expectations. We truly had an action packed week of Awesome Environmental awareness! I hope all of you enjoyed your make-and-take bird feeders and UpCycled 2L bottle flower pots. Our hope is that in the coming weeks/months you are able to transplant your perfect plant for all of nature to enjoy. Everyone loved getting their hands dirty and expressed how fun it was to 'plant' something. Earlier in the week we also had a special guest speaker (Mrs. Fields). Mrs. Fields shared with use her famous 'red wigglers' while we learned about the importance of vermi-composting. Take a look at the pictures below and be sure to ask your child about them. Also, remember to return your Earth Day Bingo cards so that you can earn your Environmental Winnit.

Here is a closer look at the worms used for Vermi-Composting. They are not the ones you find out in the garden normally.

Each student had the chance to see the red wigglers up close. They do not like light so we had to use a popsicle stick to gently expose them.
As a class were are separating food scraps that red wigglers
like from foods that the don't like.

When we were finished we had a good idea about what
to feed our new 'class pets'.
The red wigglers do not enjoy the sun so, as a class, we needed to crete some bedding (shredded newspaper) to help protect them from the light and keep them happy.
