Measurement in Motion.

Today we worked on visualizing and measurement. Students were asked to think about and draw something that could be measured with a cm ruler.  Take a look at some of the items that were drawn.

Students also had to visualize and draw something that could be measured using a meter stick(s).

Jayden said you could measure a baby/toddler with meter stick.

Cooper suggested we measure a table using a meter stick.

Etana knows that you can measure a book shelf with a meter stick.

Jessee was interested in measuring a shark using a meter stick!

Earth Day....well maybe a week!

We spent a lot of last week integrating Earth Day into our curriculum expectations. We truly had an action packed week of Awesome Environmental awareness! I hope all of you enjoyed your make-and-take bird feeders and UpCycled 2L bottle flower pots. Our hope is that in the coming weeks/months you are able to transplant your perfect plant for all of nature to enjoy. Everyone loved getting their hands dirty and expressed how fun it was to 'plant' something. Earlier in the week we also had a special guest speaker (Mrs. Fields). Mrs. Fields shared with use her famous 'red wigglers' while we learned about the importance of vermi-composting. Take a look at the pictures below and be sure to ask your child about them. Also, remember to return your Earth Day Bingo cards so that you can earn your Environmental Winnit.

Here is a closer look at the worms used for Vermi-Composting. They are not the ones you find out in the garden normally.

Each student had the chance to see the red wigglers up close. They do not like light so we had to use a popsicle stick to gently expose them.
As a class were are separating food scraps that red wigglers
like from foods that the don't like.

When we were finished we had a good idea about what
to feed our new 'class pets'.
The red wigglers do not enjoy the sun so, as a class, we needed to crete some bedding (shredded newspaper) to help protect them from the light and keep them happy.

Measurement

We have completed our work with Multiplication and Division and are now moving on to Measurement. Today we started working with centimetre rulers. One of the important tips we practiced was to always 'align' whatever object you are measuring with the 0 cm mark. Here are a few pictures of what we measured 'around the room'. As you can see we are already quite skilled in our alignment!

Emma measured her pencil at 15 cm
Isaac's hi-liter was 7cm.

Lyam's scissors were 14cm.
Thomas' marker was 14 cm.

Our Little Mad Scientists!

Last week we were blessed to have Mad Science do an exclusive classroom presentation. The cost of this presentation was ABSOLUTELY free because earlier in the year the class organized a pizza lunch day. We were able to cover not only the cost of a presentation but also a free 'race car' take away for each student. Take a look a the kids enjoying the hands on fun!
Be sure to check back in. I'll be trying to post some video of our 'cat'apult launches.

Multiplication and Division

On Numeracy we have been working on multiplication. Students are steadily improving with both their knowledge of multiplication facts and their problem solving strategies.  Take a look at some successful strategies from a "Mind's On" activity we completed last week.

MIND'S ON QUESTION:

Here is our Mind's On question displayed on the document camera for everyone to see.

Tessa working it out
Cooper was efficient and used multiplication right away.
Ayden created arrays as a successful strategy.
Deede represented each video game using arrays
Emma used a variety of strategies including arrays and multiplication.

Autism Awareness

For the month of April we will be learning a little more about Autism to help re-inforce the difference between facts and opinions. Please watch some of the video's posted below with your child. Don't forget to send back your blue slip if you are interested in 'lighting it up blue' at home!
